The mobile phone adoptions in
Hong Kong
and
Taiwan
are more than 100%. In another words, on average everyone has more than one cell phone.
Mobile communication is very useful to mobile workers. But in some rare cases mobile communication brings some inconveniences. For example, it is not unusual for a sales representative to be responding to customer enquiry on a cell phone and at the same time talking to product manager on a desktop phone about the questions from the customer.
Mobile
and enterprise communications have always been two independent systems. However, with the increasing penetration on dual-band (GSM/3G and WIFI) mobile devices and UC - FMC (Unified Communication Fixed Mobile Convergence) has become a reality. IDC finds that about 45% of companies in service sector in
Western Europe
will adopt FMC in year 2007 and 2008.
I would like to share with you some personal experiences. I have installed a UC mobile client on my smart-phone and turning it into a WIFI endpoint connecting to the company UC system. I use my smart-phone to make and receive phone calls via my mobile number as well as my company extension number. Incoming call to my extension will ring both my desktop phone and my smart-phone, and I can receive the call with either device. When I am out of office and my smart-phone is not connected to the company wireless network, the UC system will automatically forward any incoming call to my extension to my mobile number. I am connected no matter where I am!
Using the UC mobile client, my smart-phone provides the same features of desktop phone, such as call transfer and multi-party conferencing, which greatly improve my communications efficiency! I no longer have to search the address book on my smart-phone, then key in the number on my desktop phone in order to make a conference call with a customer and engineer. Life has become much easier.
My smart-phone is equipped with mobile office software, email and web browsing applications. I am now able to accomplish my work with only my smart-phone in hand. Integration between mobile and unified communications helps me to improve my productivity when traveling.
This morning I flew from
Taipei
to
Hong Kong
and then I took train to
Guangzhou
. I read and sent emails during the 2-hour journey on the train. I had a lunch meeting and data center visit with an important customer in
Guangzhou
. After that I took train back to
Hong Kong
and I received some calls from business partners when I was typing the summary of the lunch meeting. I am now writing this article on the flight from
Hong Kong
to
Taipei
. I am accompanied with my UC-enabled smart-phone throughout every day of my busy schedule! No more heavy baggage. UC makes working much more effective, efficient and enjoyable!
